The story of a viral hero
The story is simple and talks about Mamoudou Gassama. The young man who saves a child’s life and became a hero, but now he is also the new viral person on the internet.
On last Saturday, Mamoudou Gassama, a young immigrant Malian, climbed in just a few seconds with bare hands the facade of a building of the street Marx Dormoy, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, to save a child. The child was suspended in space. Mamoudou Gassama’s heroic and selfless gesture was filmed by spectators and broadcasted on the internet. The video exceeded 4 million views.
Like anything viral on the internet, the newspapers were interested in his story. He was interviewed by many of them to talk about the reason why he decided to help the child. As if you need a reason to save someone when you can… He was received by the President of France Emmanuel Macron, at the Elysée Palace. Where he got a diploma for Act of bravery and devotion, he became a naturalized citizen.
Reality on Internet
On the web, people always have something to say. It may be a negative or positive view. So in just a few days, people started to see some conspiracy theory. For example, several migrant aid associations have denounced the “hypocrisy” of the government, which, according to them, the government masks the “hardness of migration” policy. And also, the fact that for few surfers, all the scene was premeditated and according to them, the act wasn’t a disinterested action. They also said that a neighbour from the balcony next door, who was also trying to helping the boy, could have saved him.
Anyway, this article is not about the debate around the heroism of Mister Gassama or what people think about the story, although that debate is already long enough it could be made into a book. But here, we’re going to talk about how the video become viral and how internet mimicked it.
Internet, this ocean of WTF
It is bizzare how much time you can spend on social media. You can start by watching a photoshop tutorial or looking at a picture and 3 hours later, doing nothing, you surprise yourself watching a dog who’s trying to say: hello.
I mean the time when you come back from school or work and take out your phone. Also, when you’re on the toilet or just before going to sleep. You tell yourself you’re just going to have a quick scroll through, but you end up scrolling until 2 am.
This is how the internet works and this is what internet did to the video of Mamoudou Gassama rescue.
It starts with what I saw on the internet and it makes me laugh, like never before. I wasn’t ready for that. I was surprised by all the fun videos and mimics who came out. So, for you dear readers, I selected few of them who made me laugh a lot.
You know life is complicated, and with all the bad news we see on newspapers, television and all that stuff. I think life is a little bit easier when we try to look on the bright side of things and remember that it’s okay to have a good laugh. This is one step you can take to try and enjoy your life that little bit more.
The first one is about 3 Malian Man wearing the traditional dress “djellaba”, but in the colors of Marvel Super Heroes. It’s also written in French “ France, prepare the papers we’re coming” and it means that they want to be French Citizen too.
This picture shows a Cat calling Mamoudou Gassama, the man who saves the kid. The Cat is asking him to be saved.
About this one, my friend sent me the video and said me: Nancy, talk to your brother, please. It wasn’t meant in a bad way when she said that, because between us (I mean black people), this is our way to make fun of ourselves. You can’t take things too seriously. It’s good to be able to laugh at yourself. In this video, the man is practicing to climb a building to have a winning ticket for becoming a French citizen too. Of course, this is a humorous video.
